 I don't remember seeing these birds (our area) last summer, or perhaps I  missed the migration window. So I was pleased to see them and get photos.Their orange color,wing beat, and call are very easy to distinguish from the other hummingbirds.These fierce little Rufous Hummingbirds have temporarily displaced the Anna's hummingbirds at the feeders but the Anna's still manage to sneak in a drink or two before being run off  :)

Tarantula Hawks - DesertUSA

Several species of the wasps known as "tarantula hawks" inhabit the desert lands of the southwest. Tarantula hawks are most active in the summer, during the day, although they avoid the highest temperatures. Females give the wasps their common name. Like all members of this genus, they require a spider to serve as host for their larvae, and in the case of the local species, tarantulas are the preferred nursery.
