Dark adult Ferruginous Hawk

Every bird  I photograph then attempt to identify is always an enjoyable challenge for me.   However, to correctly identify a Hawk is another story. It takes me hours to look through books and the internet to find a picture that looks similar to the one I have. So occasionally I have to ask my friends for help and I in return gain much needed education in birding.  I first thought this was a Turkey Vulture but the beak didn't quite look (red) like one, but the white under the wings sure did!  What do you think?

sheesh...Cynthia...I don't know. It's head looks more like a hawk than a turkey vulture. Great captures!

Hi Cynthia, your post makes me feel much better. Thought I was the only one with that "nail down the ID" challenge. I guess it's just part of the fascination of birding. :-) Great post! and I'm not sure on your question. ;-)

Gracious Thanks! for all your help regarding this Hawk. Jerry is the 2nd person to say it is Dark adult Ferruginous Hawk. These hawks are very difficult but fun to I.D. and I need all the help I can get :)
